Unique Vacation Idea: See a Shuttle Launch

By Gene Randolph Smith

Space shuttle mission STS-129 is scheduled to launch on November 12, 2009. In the following year, there are only 5 space shuttle missions planned to take place. After that, the era of the will be over. Now is the time to make your vacation plans to try and see a shuttle launch in person before the program ends.

NASA plans to complete the 5 final space shuttle missions in 2010. If you get the opportunity to see a space shuttle launch, by all means take it. The year 2010 will be the last time for anyone to watch a space shuttle launch.

Since space shuttle launches are often delayed, a wise thing to do would be to combine your shuttle viewing vacation with other Florida vacation activities. You can relax on Florida beaches or enjoy activities in Orlando if NASA changes its shuttle launch plans. Since Orlando is approximately an hour away from Cape Canaveral, your shuttle launch vacation can include space museums and beach fun as well as Orlando amusement park fun.

Where are the best places to see a shuttle launch? Almost anywhere in Titusville, the closest city to the Kennedy Space Center, is good to see the launch. Titusville even has a place called Space View Park, where people from all over the world congregate to witness space shuttles launching. Many of the locations are free to the public.

You can also see a launch from two places at the Kennedy Space Center- the Visitor Complex or the NASA causeway. To see a launch at KSC, you have to get tickets in advance. The tickets often sell out rapidly and there are no refunds. The NASA causeway is the only public location at KSC with a view of the launch pad because the Visitor Complex area has trees and things blocking the view.

Your Orlando vacation can include Walt Disney World, Sea World Orlando, and Universal Studios. You can also visit Discovery Cove, a tropical park where vacationers swim with dolphins and pet manta rays. Older children and adults enjoy the roller coasters at Sea World and Universal Studios.

With so many things to do in Orlando and near the launch site, you will be able to have a memorable Florida vacation even if the space shuttle launch is delayed. So plan now to have a vacation which may give you a once-in-a-lifetime chance to view a space shuttle launch. If you wait past 2010, you will miss your opportunity to see a shuttle launch. If you are lucky, you may be able to see a launch before the end of the space shuttle program. Good luck! - 29977
