Paradise Found -- Camping in the Florida Keys

By Gail Nettles

Bahia Honda State Park has something very uncommon for the Florida Keys. It has a beach. Plus a truely beautiful one as well. Add to it nice camping sites and you've got the formula for a Florida Keys camping wonderland. Let's find out why.

Although the Florida Keys are islands in the sun, naturally made beaches are very rare indeed. Why? Mostly since the turquoise waters surrounding the Florida Keys are so tranquil, the sand does not get an opportunity to build up. Bahia Honda has, hands down, the most beautiful beach in the Florida Keys, and probably the loveliest in Florida.

Swimming is a popular activity at Bahia Honda State Park. The calm turquoise waters are warm, being in the upper 70s to the low eighties nearly all of the year. And the waters are very clear. Though the beach faces out to the Atlantic, unless there's a storm out in the ocean, the waters are calm.

Along with swimming, snorkeling is a big draw to the park. The peaceful, clear turquoise waters that invite swimming are superb for exploring the underwater world. And if you really want a treat, take a snorkeling tour from Bahia Honda out to Looe Key to visit the coral reef.

Kayaking, canoeing and boating are always on the list of fun things to do at the park. There is a small marina plus a boat ramp. If you've somehow misplaced your own boat, you are able to rent a kayak from the park's concession stand. The serene waters are great for exploring the nooks and crannies of the key, particularly on the Gulf side.

Let's not forget Florida Keys camping. From tents to RVs to renting one of their beach cabins, many sorts of camping are available. Here's a caveat: phone ahead to reserve a camping spot or particularly one of the air-conditioned cabins. As you could imagine, a beach cottage in this Florida paradise has a bit of a waiting list.

Bahia Honda State Park is located in the lower Florida Keys, just south and west of Seven Mile Bridge. One visit and you will realize why they call the Florida Keys the American Caribbean. Or just call it Paradise.

So come on down for a visit. The weather is beautiful and the natives are friendly. And once you're here, you'll have to agree that paradise is found at Bahia Honda State Park in the lower Florida Keys.
